The launcher

What the CyberCTF launcher does, and what it needs to run Docker and VM labs.

The launcher is a small desktop app (built with Tauri) that downloads labs, runs them and gives them your personal evidence.

What it does

  • Signs you in through your browser. Tokens are stored in your system keychain, never in files.
  • Downloads labs from their public GitHub repository, at the exact commit published on CyberCTF.
  • Runs labs with Docker Compose, or with Vagrant for VM labs.

Docker labs

You need Docker Desktop (macOS, Windows) or Docker Engine with the Compose plugin (Linux). Stopping a lab removes its containers and volumes, so every start is a clean environment.

VM labs

VM labs use Vagrant, which drives many hypervisors: VirtualBox, VMware Workstation/Fusion, Hyper-V, Parallels, libvirt, QEMU and UTM, plus remote VMware ESXi and Proxmox hosts.

On Apple Silicon Macs, ARM boxes run natively with UTM or QEMU. Labs whose machines only exist for x86 run under emulation, which is much slower; a remote x86 host is the better option for them.
